Ljubljana Airport
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, Zgornji Brnik 130a, 4210 Brnik, SloveniaFacts and History about Ljubljana Airport
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport or Letališče Jožeta Pučnika Ljubljanai in Slovene, is the largest airport in Slovenia and it is the international airport servicing Ljubljana. The IATA code is LJU and the ICAO code is LJLJ.
The airport is located near the town of Brnik, 24 km/15 mi northwest of Ljubljana and it is the reason why it was previously named Brnik Airport, and it is still a common name used for the airport.
The town of Kranj at the foothills of Kamnik-Savinja Alps is located 9.5 km/5.9 mi from the airport.
The airport at Brnik was officially opened in December of 1963, with regular flights beginning in January the following year, replacing Polje Airport as the official airport servicing Ljubljana. Polje Airport was Slovenia’s first civil airport and it opened in 1933.
Brnik Airport was bombed on June 27th of 1991, only two days after Slovenia’s Independence from Yugoslavia, on the same day as Yugoslav People’s Army, JPA, began its military operations in Slovenia. The following day two foreign journalists, a German and an Austrian, were killed by a missile while driving by the airport and four Adria Airways airliners took some serious damage before the JPA soldiers surrendered after the airport was surrounded by Slovenian TO forces. The fighting ended on July 7th, only 10 days after it began, with the Brioni Agreement.
The airport first reached an annual million passengers in December of 2004 and in 2019 they served 1,721,355 passengers, which was a drop of 5% from the previous year.
The airport was renamed to its current name in 2007 after the leader of the Democratic Opposition of Slovenia, Jožse Pučnik. As Slovenia entered the EU the airport had to be divided into Schengen and non-Schengen zones which led to an expansion to the passenger terminal with a new upper level of an additional 4,000 square meters.
The plan was to also build a new terminal in a second phase of the extension plan but that plan was scrapped by minority stakeholders in 2013.
Up until 2014 the airport was run by Aerodrom Ljubljana Airport Authorities, a governmental authority, at which point the Slovenian government initiated a privatisation process through bidding that was won by Fraport who acquired 75.5% of the shares with the remaining shares being acquired in the months to follow until they had 100% ownership of the airport.
A new Master Plan for increasing passenger capacity through terminal extensions was announced in April of 2017and it will allow the airport’s departure area to handle 1,250 passengers per hour compared to today’s 500. The plan is in several phases and includes a 10,000 square meter/110,000 square feet extension to the west of the current passenger terminal. This new extension will allow for a bigger arrivals area, more check-in desks, a bigger duty free shop area and a new business lounge, and more. The current passenger terminal will be partly renovated.
The Master Plan for the development of the airport for the period leading up to 2040 with the first phase planned to be completed in 2021,
Ljubljana Airport has one asphalt runway of 3,300 m/10,827 ft.
Flights to and from the airport are within Europe at this point.
